Франсис Рогало е американски авиационен инженер, който е известен най-добре с изобретението си за гъвкаво крило, наричано още крило "Rogallo". Това е едно от най-простите създадени летателни средства. Той се надява, неговото крило да стане общодостъпно въздухоплавателно средство, което би било толкова просто и евтино, че който поиска да може да го притежава и ползва.
Идеята е за едно опростено и евтино летящо крило, което се състои от две частично конични повърхности, насочени напред. Той е предшественик на съвременните делтапланери. С тази идея Франсис Рогало е известен като "бащата на делтапланеризма".
В днешно време ползване на модерните делтапланери, включващи модерни технологии, позволяват на пилотите да летят с часове. Благодарение на умелото използване на издигащите се топли въздушни потоци, те могат да спечелят хиляди метра надморска височина и да летят в продължение на стотици километри - Cross Country.
Франсис Мелвин Рогало е роден в Сангър, Калифорния, през 1912 година. Той започва да се интересува от авиация, когато на 7 годишна възраст вижда един самолет да изпълнява висш пилотаж над дома му. По-късно той кандидатства като пилот в американските военни сили, но не е бил приет, тъй като има проблем с десния крак при злополука от детството му. В последствие той се записва в университета в Станфорд за въздухоплаване и машиностроене. Завършва през 1935 година. Удостоен е с първа аеронавигационна степен в САЩ.
През 1936 г. той започва работа в Националния консултативен комитет за аеронавтика (NACA) в Хамптън, щата Вирджиния, като инженер по проекта за въздухоплаване. Историята на крилото "Rogallo" започва през 1948 година. Заедно с жена му, Гертруд, той започва да развива своите идеи за гъвкави, ултра-леки самолети у дома си.
На шевна машина с кухненска завеса, те произвеждат първото гъвкаво крило, описан от The New York Times като "нещо като кръстоска между плаваща лодка и парашут." Той решава, че може да се използва за нови видове въздухоплавателни средства. Въпреки, че той полага големи усилия за привличане на подкрепа от правителството и индустрията, нито NACA, нито някой друг се интересува от него.
Франсис и съпругата му патентоват изобретението и започват да продават крилата си като триъгълник с форма на хвърчило. Така Франсис Рогало лети крилата си като модели с малки товари под тях.
Положението се променя, когато на 4 октомври 1957 г. Съветският съюз стартира първия си изкуствен спътник (Спутник) и космическата надпревара. Рогало предлага своя патент на правителството, и така неговите знания добиват публичност и възможност за реализация. Националната въздухоплавателна и космическа администрация (НАСА), започва с негова помощ, поредица от експерименти с крилото "Rogallo", като го преименува на "Parawing".
До 1960 НАСА прави тест полети на моторизиран "Parawing", който каца на малки и неравни повърхности със и без пилот.
Чрез използването на вятърни тунели, изпълнението на "Parawing" е тествано във височина, за да се оценят качествата му като алтернатива за възстановяване на системата за космически капсули. Но през 1967 г., НАСА спира тази работа и пренасочват усилията си към кръгли парашути.
Францис Рогало се пенсионира през 1970 г., но продължава нови проекти за хвърчила, които се управляват с изместване центъра на тежеста.. Той прави последния си полет на 80-тия си рожден ден. Получава световно признание за приноса му към спортната авиация.
Съпругата му Гертруд умира през 2008 година. Има три дъщери и един син. Франсис Рогало е роден на 27 януари 1912 година. Умира на 1 септември, 2009 на 97 години.
